Mayra Rejoins the Workforce with the Help of Skills and Freedman Seating Company

When Mayra moved to Chicago in October 2022, she had no idea it would be so difficult to find work. She applied for many jobs, from airport security to retail and food service positions, but she did not hear back from anyone.

Mayra learned about Skills when her wife shared a few roles from the website with her. She immediately applied and quickly heard back from Erica on the Talent Acquisition team. Erica was able help Mayra interview and get hired at Freedman Seating Company (Freedman) within a week. We talked to Mayra as she shared more about her journey since being hired as a Customer Service Representative in January 2023.

How was your experience working with Skills?

I felt very supported throughout the entire process. It almost felt like I had a personal assistant for my job search, and Erica really provided me with the encouragement I needed and confidence to do my best.

How did it feel when you were offered the position with Freedman?

I was offered the position right after my interview. By the time I got to my car, I saw that I already had received an email from HR with the offer. I was very excited and shared the good news right away!

What opportunities has this job provided for you?

So far, this role has exceeded my expectations. They offer me the training to succeed in my role and opportunities for advancement.

Also, this job provides me with good financial stability, a 401(k), and a free gym membership along with a nice personal trainer discount. So, I can work, get paid, and work on my physical self — it’s amazing!

How do you feel Freedman is supporting your career goals?

I want to pursue psychology and further research on the human psyche for veterans having undergone traumatic experiences. I know Freedman will help support me when I decide to continue my education.

I would highly recommend Skills to other job seekers! They really provide a foot in the door and it’s up to us to take the next step. I also love how they offer plenty of in-depth information on the jobs in terms of the role, company, pay, and more.
